Doctors
Melissa Backman, D.M.D. Lexington Dentist
Dr. Melissa Backman grew up in the Lexington area. She knew she wanted to return to her hometown to practice dentistry and in 2009 she opened White Knoll Dentistry.
Dr. Backman completed her undergraduate degree at Winthrop University and went on to receive her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. She completed a General Practice Residency after dental school at the Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City where she received advanced training in treating children and patients with special needs.
She most enjoys working on very young patients and patients who have dental anxiety. She never wants anyone to fear or dread coming to the dentist and hopes that she can build trust with all patients, but especially patients who avoid the dentist out of fear. There is immeasurable satisfaction in turning fearful patients into committed ones with healthy teeth and gums.
Dr. Backman lives in Lexington with her husband, Dewayne, who is a Certified Public Accountant. You can often find Dewayne helping out around the office or upstairs working on tax returns.
Dr. Backman has two little ones, Daniel and Adelyn, so there is no such thing as “down time”, but she enjoys traveling with her family and capturing these memories on camera. They are excited to be a part of the White Knoll community!
Kate Pennella, D.M.D.
Dr. Kate Pennella
grew up in Pennsylvania but has always had strong ties to South
Carolina. Spending her summers on Edisto Island as a little girl,
she always hoped to move to the south one day. After graduating
with a Biology degree from Franklin and Marshall College, she moved
to Charleston, earning her doctorate from the Medical University of
South Carolina. Dr. Pennella graduated in the top 10% of her class
and was inducted into the dental honor society, Omicron Kappa
Upsilon. Following dental school, she completed a residency in
General Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill. After a year of private practice in Richmond, VA, she
returned to South Carolina, joining the team at White Knoll
Dentistry in 2011. She is married to Dr. Dan Pennella, orthodontist
and owner of The Braces Place in Lexington. They are kept very busy
by their children, Max and Claire.
Aimee Brown, D.M.D.
Dr. Aimee Brown
grew up in the small town of Cottageville, SC. She completed her
undergraduate degree in Biology from Erskine College and went on to
receive her doctorate in Dental Medicine from the Medical
University of South Carolina. After graduation she moved to
Lancaster, SC to practice general dentistry with her husband, Dr.
Ray Brown. Since 2006 Dr. Brown has practiced alongside her husband
in their family practice and she joined the White Knoll Dentistry
team in 2015. Drawn to Lexington’s small town feel, hospitality,
and proximity to their families Dr. Brown and her husband decided
to make Lexington their home. In her spare time she enjoys outings
with her two wonderful children (Benjamin and Rose), reading,
camping, volunteering, and time with her friends.
